Epic Certifications for Billing: Which Ones Matter and How to Get Certified (2026)
If you want to work in Epic billing, you will quickly run into the phrase "Epic certified." This guide explains what it means, which Epic certifications matter for billing roles, how to get one, and what to do if you do not work for an Epic organization yet.
What does "Epic certified" mean?
Epic certified means you completed Epic's training for a specific application and passed its exam. Certification is issued by Epic Systems and is tied to a module, so you are certified in something like Resolute Professional Billing, not in "Epic" as a whole. Employers use it as proof that you can build and support that application.
Which Epic certifications matter for billing?
For billing and revenue cycle work, the ones that appear most in job listings are:
- Resolute Professional Billing (PB): provider claims. See Epic Resolute professional billing.
- Resolute Hospital Billing (HB): facility claims. See Epic Resolute hospital billing.
- Claims and Remittance: available on both the professional and hospital sides.
- Charge Router: routes charges into the right billing application.
Revenue cycle teams sometimes also list neighboring applications such as Prelude (registration) and Cadence (scheduling). For an overview of how these pieces fit together, start with Epic Resolute billing.
How to get Epic certified
- Get hired by an organization that uses Epic, such as a hospital system or large physician group, or by Epic itself.
- Get sponsored. You generally cannot enroll as an individual. Your employer has to put you forward for training in the module you will support.
- Complete the training. Courses are focused on your assigned application and may be held at Epic's campus in Verona, Wisconsin or through approved remote options.
- Pass the exam. After you pass, Epic issues the certification.
Epic certification cost
One 2026 overview estimates Epic certification at roughly $500 to $10,000, with an average near $5,000. In practice the sponsoring employer normally covers it, so you typically do not pay out of pocket.
Can you get Epic certified on your own?
Not in the usual sense. Courses sold by third parties can teach concepts, but they are not the same as being Epic certified. If a site promises Epic certification for a fee with no employer involved, be careful and check what you would actually receive.
Do you need certification to get an Epic billing job?
For application analyst roles, usually yes, or a commitment to get certified shortly after hire. Some listings state a window, such as within 12 months of starting. For billing specialist roles, Epic experience helps, but certification is often not required on day one.
Other credentials that help with Epic billing roles
Employers also look for general revenue cycle and billing credentials, such as the CRCR from HFMA and the CPB from AAPC. See our guide to RCM certifications for how those compare.
