Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Analyst

-

RCM Analysts look at the healthcare revenue cycle as a whole, tracking key metrics like days in accounts receivable, denial rates, and net collection percentage to identify where a billing process is losing money or efficiency. This is a more analytical role than billing or coding, focused on process improvement rather than day-to-day claim submission.

Typical responsibilities include building and reviewing performance reports, identifying trends in claim denials, recommending workflow or system changes, and working with billing, coding, and patient access teams to fix root causes of revenue leakage. Strong Excel skills and comfort working with billing system reports (from platforms like Epic, Athenahealth, or Oracle Health, formerly Cerner) are usually required.

This role often sits above entry-level billing or coding positions and can be a natural next step for candidates with a few years of hands-on revenue cycle experience who want to move into a more strategic role. Many listings in this category use titles like revenue cycle specialist or RCM specialist, which mix billing, payment posting, and collections follow up. Health systems, medical groups, and revenue cycle consulting firms are the main employers.

Pay on this board varies a lot by title and level. Hourly revenue cycle listings typically run about $23 to $27 an hour, and salaried listings, which include manager roles, typically run about $72,000 to $107,000. Candidates with strong data analysis skills, EHR reporting experience, or RCM leadership exposure land toward the top. See our revenue cycle analyst salary guide for pay by experience level.
