Inpatient vs. Outpatient Coding (2026)
Inpatient and outpatient coding are both medical coding, but they use different systems, cover different types of care, and lead toward different certifications. Here's how they compare.
Inpatient coding
Inpatient coding covers patients formally admitted to a hospital. It uses ICD-10-CM for diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS for procedures, and reimbursement is based on MS-DRG (Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group) assignment. Inpatient coders review the entire hospital stay, which tends to mean longer, more complex records than a single outpatient visit. The standard certification is the CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA.
Outpatient coding
Outpatient coding covers visits that don't involve a formal hospital admission, things like physician office visits, same-day procedures, and emergency department visits that don't result in admission. It uses CPT codes for procedures, and reimbursement typically follows APC (Ambulatory Payment Classification) or fee-for-service methodology. Outpatient coding is often considered a more accessible entry point, with the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCA (Certified Coding Associate) as common starting certifications.
