Medical Coder Salary Guide (2026): What You Can Earn by Experience

Medical coder salary is one of the most-searched topics in this field, and the range is wide - the highest-paid 10 percent earn more than double the lowest-paid 10 percent. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $51,140 (May 2025) for medical records specialists, the broader category coders fall under, with the real number depending on certification, specialization, and the setting you work in. Pay by experience level

BLS reports that the lowest-paid 10 percent of medical records specialists earned less than $37,000, while the highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $81,150. Within that range, typical pay by experience looks like this:

  • Mid-career (2-5 years): typically $50,000-$60,000, often coinciding with a move into a more specialized coding area or a second certification.
